Thanks to donations, our Charity has been able to enhance patient care, by purchasing new cooling caps in the chemotherapy suites at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich and University Hospital Lewisham.

Scalp cooling caps are headwear that attach to cooling devices and offer targeted treatment while patients receive chemotherapy. The scalp cooling caps work by blocking blood flow to the blood vessels, reducing the damage to the hair follicle and can assist with reducing hair loss.

Patient Federica kindly offered to model the caps for us and discussed her treatment:

I have used cooling caps before during and after chemo. The cooling caps have allowed me to retain some of my hair, this has helped greatly with my psychological wellbeing whilst continuing my treatment.

Lead Chemotherapy Nurse & Matron for Cancer Services Chioma Achugbu explained, "The prevention of chemo induced hair loss is an integral part of the holistic care we provide to our patients. Without scalp cooling caps, patients would not be able to receive scalp cooling therapy.

Having enough cooling caps of different sizes mean that more patients can be treated at any given time, leading to better service with positive impact on patients' chemotherapy journey."

Our charity is committed to enhancing the experience for our patients at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, we are delighted to support cancer services with this equipment to ensure our patients receive the best care available.
